I feel really close to Tony lately while working on a new zine called Crab Malice. I remember how excited he was as Broken Umbrella submissions came in. When I feel stuck about something I think of Tony and how he tackled the various challenges and puzzles of putting together a zine with many submissions. Broken Umbrella was so rad when it came out and it ages like a fine wine. I appreciate it even more as the various people involved and covered in it have gone on to do so many wonderful things. It's quite heartwarming. Tony knew what treasures surrounded him. He always did, from the first issue of Ground Beef, to Synthesis, to Broken Umbrella and beyond.

Attached is a sketch from my friend, SF artist, Nathalie Rolands
sketchbook. This was done from when Ray and the Mattson II played Thomas
Campbells art opening in LA.

I really like this sketch a lot. It's really great to have all these
friends, from totally different parts of my life, converge (is that even a
word?) and make the little things in life a little bit better.

All are fantastic, from Nathalie an amazing woodcut artist (and sweet
girl), to Ray being not only a brilliant skateboarder, but in my opionion,
and even better musician, to Thomas, who well, is Thomas. One word of
about Tmoe. He is where he is at, artistically and whatnot, by hard work
and a belief in himself. I'll be the first to say, it's not natural
talent by that man. He has turned out to be a significant artist and surf
film maker.

Today, August 11th 2006, marks the two year anniversary of my brother
Tony's death. I can't believe it has been two years, but at the same
time, it feels like a life time ago. There is not a day that goes by,
that I don't think about him. Most of the time I feel fine. Some times I
feel a bit sad. All of the time I miss him and hope he is doing well, in
the after life.

Attached is a picture, about 2 days before his last day on earth. This is
my favorite picture from the Thailand trip. We were just on a boat ride,
in the rain, in this river, and "boat" is a generous word for what this
was. It was rough, and the boat was "flying" with the kids shouting
"rocket ship, rocket ship". It was thrilling, exillerating, and death
defying. It made us feel alive. This was right when we got off the boat,
giving the "sign". I started it, and Tony followed. I love how he is
looking at me, forever my little brother, following my lead, but always
forging it his own way.

I'm going out on a boat ride with Rose and the kids, tonight. It will
feel strange, but hopefully, a reminder of being alive.

A cozy, cool hang out

Tony talked about opening a bar in SF...a cozy spot where friends could hang out, show their art, play records, shoot the shit, order in Thai food, write stories about each other....
So I picture us celebrating his birthday by tag-teaming on the turntables, playing his favorite records - the old favorites and whatever's he's nodding his head to these days. We'd make Tony take shots, watch him wash them down with sips from the old canteen. Dance around with his tongue out!!! (if we're super lucky)
and he's wearing one of those pink Poketo tees with the tie image - AND a tie. why not?
I love and miss you, Tony, and think about you, and feel your presence - all the time, and especially when you send free food my way.........Heartfelt birthday wishes from Jessica.

of Tony...half naked!!!...OW!!!...with posters.

I actually had a dream with Tony on the 10th. He was working at a bike
shop. In the dream, he had done an "Elvis" and had faked his death and I
somehow had found him. He had changed his name to Tonzey, or something
like that. I gave him a big hug, touched his face, and told him that we
loved him and missed him a lot. He had longer hair, below his ears, and
was wearing a dark blue/scarlet red wool sweater. Very Tony.

Afterwards, I found it wierd, because I had not been thinking too much
about the upcoming birthday and had not really had dreams with him...it
made me think later that he was probably making his rounds, touching base
about what was going on with him. It was a cool shop on a very cool
stretch of street that had a lot of cool shops and a lot of pedestrian
traffic and things going on.

Either way....it was nice to see him.

I hope you enjoy the picture...it reminds me of his RAD body!!!

I babysat little Lux while the Grandparents were all on vacation. He was so cute, I was running around the house, keeping busy with stuff and he was watching a movie. Probably with all my bustle, he said, "Uncle Ted, sit down here" and pointed to the place next to him. I sat and he would put his head on my head and we watched the movie. He was up for anything... "want to eat?", "want to go the bookstore?", "I have to go to Target"... everything was "okay!" He ate more than usual that day... spaghetti in the morning and then a pizza in the afternoon.

I got Tony's black bike all fixed up. It's such a sweet ride, total cruiser, 3 speeds, a fine looking bike. Probably made in the 60s sometime, I totally understand Tony's happiness on that ride, I kind of imagine feeling the same thing he did on that bike. Its sort of a tall bike, upright cruiser, a little shaky, but steady, you feel like your on a faithful, old bike. We did the midnight ridaaz tour, it was excellent.... 500+ bikers cruising through LA. They do it every month, we'll definitely do it again.

Nathalie Roland and I had a nice cup of coffee and worked at little at the We Cafe. Such a nice little spot off the Haight with free internet and big couches.

We worked for a couple of hours on our laptops among other laptopers, before getting really hungry and going to King of Thai for some warm noodle soup and rice.

It was there that Nathalie came up with having all the Poketo crew carrying a secret ring... like a club ring. A ring that was embossed, so that when we write letters, we can dip the ring in wax and seal our conversations. I would love to have a 'letterman' style ring. Anyone out there a ring maker? Above are some sketches.

I just wanted to say I had a really great time. Thanks for everyone who
made it out, and also those who couldn't make it, I totally understand.

On a side note, I guess I'm really
old. I figured 1:30 start is a good time. The truth is most of you
people don't wake up until 1:30 on Saturday. It's all good though. The
party probably had it's peak amount of people around the 5 PM mark, but we
went on until I think 1 AM or something.

Woke up early, a little hung and tired, but had to go to the skatepark.
So drained, but I promised some of the boys we would meet up. Jeff Litz,
who ended up spending the night, even did a bit of pukeing at the park,
now that is punk:-)

Again, a great 40th party, and thanks to all, my family and friends.

N and I dueted the first nite, I spent the second night in SF singing alone in their room, while they were working away. Avril, eat your heart out. I'm super psyched, Lux is FINALLY taking an
interst in skating (and not the blading kind, thank you). I've been
playing some videos, and he was starting to like them, a bit. Then we had
a small talk, about him wanted to learn. I think he was afraid of the
hurt factor, so we talked, and decided he needed gear, head to toe. He
already had a helmet, so that was good. Yesterday, $30 later, he now has
kneepads, elbowpads, and wrist guard. He even got himself an Alien
Workshop Tee. I have a bunch of boards around, so he got to pick one out
for himself.

We only skated for about 5 mins, mostly him jumping off the board and
testing his falling. He liked the fact that it didn't hurt. Slowly, yes
we will move slowly on this, I'm not going to push him, and turn him off
or scar him for life (sorry Ted, I was younger then).

Anyhow, I can't wait until he can push off on his own, that might be some
time, and he wants to go to the skatepark with me, but we will see.

Proud momment in my parenting career.

Tony's One Year Anniversary

It's hard for me to say it will be one year on August 11th since Tony's passing. Time does not lessen pain, it only makes me realize the inevitability of distance between us. I am scared of us growing apart as time moves forward. I see myself getting older, and Tony, eternally his young self. I always imagined us growing old together. Tony's passing reminds me of how fragile life is, how unexpected, how potentially beautiful, and how unfair.

We will be getting together with friends and family at a Thai Temple near Los Angeles on Thursday morning, August 11th to remember Tony and give him food, light, and things he needs wherever he is. You can get in touch with me or Tom to get more details. My email is tvadakan@gmail. com.

If you can't make it, just think of him and do something wonderful for him... something you know he would love. It will be a year and It will be great for us to get together and think of him collectively. Anniversaries are usually happy reminders, but, I wish Tony was with us here.

Scrabbel Tsunami Relief

This Locus Art event raised over 3000 dollars for tsunami relief organization donations. David Huang took some nice photos. Riffat Sultana is the first woman from her family’s musical lineage to publicly perform in the west. She is the daughter of Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, who was universally recognized and acclaimed as the finest Pakistani Classical singer of his time. Her family represents a 500-year lineage of musicians hailing from the Sham Chaurasi Gharana (school of music). The Ali Khan family are direct descendents of 2 famed court musicians, Suraj (of the Sun) Khan & Chand (of the Moon) Khan, who performed Morning and Evening Ragas respectively for the artistically devoted Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. Her vocals have been recorded for numerous labels including Ark 21/Universal, Triloka/Mercury, Hearts of Space, City of Tribes, 6 Degrees & XDot25.

Tony Vadakan dedicated over 22 years to the art of
photography. Often described as surreal, lonely,
moody, and intimate, Tony’s photographs contain
elements of both spontaneity and precision. During
production and in the darkroom, he created his own
tools and mastered his own techniques, employing
various filters, like crumpled paper, saran wrap, and
glass to achieve his very raw, yet clean aesthetic.

Tony’s work spoke volumes to San Francisco, a city
that was so much a part of him. He was the the
publisher of “Broken Umbrella”, a zine devoted to his
friends and family that were making art, music,
poetry, and prose. "Broken Umbrella" was a perfect
example of his natural ability for bringing people
together. The zine was not only an outlet for Tony's
creative vision, but, it also highlighted the Bay
Areas finest, including Tussle, Eamon Ore-Giron, Chris
Pew, Crystal Dillahunty, Namesake, Scrabbel, Nathalie
Roland and many more.

Eleanor Harwood and Adobe Books presents a collection
of photographs by Tony Vadakan. His brothers and
friends chose these images, some exhibited in the
past, some passed around the living room, and others
kept in his folder of negatives. For San Francisco,
this is an invitation to share and experience Tony's
legacy of radness.

We watched this hysterical video of tony playing in a band in San Luis Obispo. He was about 20 and totally punk rock man! Moshin' and sticking his tongue out. Anyways, Rose asked if I had gone through the footage from thailand... which i had not.... so, i did tonite. It's good, but very tough too. Tony is the best, really is the best. I'm going to go through each tape, from beginning to end. I have about 7 tapes from thailand. I will chronicle our adventures, showing as much of Tony as possible.
